- Plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly of the five Plasmodium species that cause malaria
- It is transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito
- Its mature form changes the surface properties of red blood cells causing them to stick to blood vessels. This results in organ dysfunction.
- Is most prevalent in the sub-Saharan Africa region
- People with Sickle cell anemia are protected from it
